Hello knitters one and all! My name is Chris and I work for The Woodland Trust’s Ancient Tree Hunt in the UK. Our project aims to record all the old trees across the UK by hugging them - this winter we have a bit of a knitting ‘thang’ going on and we want your help!

London based textile designer Laura Long, who has also worked in Ireland with John Rocha, has created patterns for scarves that are 1.5m long – a Standard British Hug – which we use for measuring ancient trees. You can then use these scarves to measure any big, old trees you come across.

We want as many scarves as possible so lots of people go out to find ancient trees this winter. This is where you come in. Visit our website below to find out more and get the free scarf patterns so you can start knitting! We have a gallery on Flickr for you to upload photos and we will feature these on the website too.

Happy knitting
